RE/SISTERS onderzoekt de diepe verbondenheid tussen de intensieve exploitatie van de aarde en sociale uitbuiting van vrouwen en minderheden. De tentoonstelling heeft wortels in het ecofeminisme, een stroming die ontstond in de jaren 1970 en vandaag springlevend is. RE/SISTERS zet het publiek oog in oog met vrouwen en gemeenschappen die protesteren. Net zij lopen vaak voorop om de aarde te verdedigen en te herstellen. Zij zien hun eigen onderdrukking en de uitputting van de planeet als resultaat van dezelfde sociale, economische en politieke krachten.

De tentoonstelling brengt werk samen van meer dan veertig vrouwelijke of gender non-conforme kunstenaars van over de hele wereld. Aan de hand van foto’s, video’s en installaties van 1969 tot nu is te zien hoe ze als bondgenoten, slachtoffers en leiders naar onze (leef)wereld kijken. En hoe ze zich presenteren als medeverzetsters (resisters) die strijden tegen systemen van onderdrukking.

Publieksprogramma

De tentoonstelling RE/SISTERS nodigt het publiek uit om los te komen van vastgeroeste overtuigingen en plaats te maken voor nieuwe perspectieven. Onder de leuze ‘The change we want to bring is what binds us’ brengt FOMU i.s.m. MINO diverse lokale stemmen samen voor ontmoetingen en gesprekken die de basis vormen voor het publieksprogramma bij de tentoonstelling.

Boek

Bij de tentoonstelling verschijnt een rijk geïllustreerde catalogus, gepubliceerd in samenwerking met Prestel. Het boek is gestructureerd rond zes thematische hoofdstukken, met essays door vooraanstaande denkers zoals Kathryn Yusoff, Astrida Neimanis, Catriona Sandilands, Greta LaFleur, Lucy Bradnock, Christine Okoth, Anna Feigenbaum, Angela Dimitrikaki, Ros Gray en Alona Pardo. Grafische vormgeving door The Bon Ton.

De tentoonstelling is gerealiseerd i.s.m. de Barbican in Londen, curator Alona Pardo.
