Photography workshop: Through the lens of Lee Miller – secondary education

Lee Miller is a versatile photographer with a fascinating life path. During this workshop, you will follow Miller and take your own photos. Which genres suit you best? Artistic still life, reportage work or fashion photography?

FOMU presents the pioneering work of American Lee Miller (1907-1977) from 2025. A female photographer, model, muse, surrealist, war reporter and cook, she had a whole range of roles in her life.

Shortly after being discovered as a model at the age of 19, she appeared on the cover of Vogue. As a photographer, she later collaborated with famous artists such as Man Ray and Jean Cocteau. She inspired them and other illustrators and photographers to create new work. Miller is best known for her pioneering role as one of the few female photographers at the time. Her work ranged from surrealist fashion photographs to iconic images of war, such as the liberation of concentration camps. The photographs appeared primarily in popular magazines, helping to shape the modern world. This exhibition highlights Lee Miller’s photographic work through her publications in well-known lifestyle magazines such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, as well as surrealist avant-garde magazines.

The exhibition brings a new perspective to the purpose and dissemination of Miller’s work. Contemporary photography is often made in function of exhibitions, while historical photography had primarily a social and political function in mass media. Visiting the exhibition thus also gives you insight into the evolution of the photographic medium in the 20th century. Seize the unique opportunity to admire the work of Miller in Antwerp, one of the most versatile photographers of the past century.
