FOMUTATION #2: Lois Cohen

Lois Cohen (b. 1991) is an award-winning photographer from Amsterdam, known for her provocative staged portraits. In her work, she challenges traditional female roles. She combines the ordinary with the extraordinary, creating a captivating and surreal fantasy world. Her photographic style is cinematic, featuring vibrant colors.

FOMUTATIONS is an experimental format of in depht talks by internationally renowned image makers. Four times a year, we welcome leading national and international speakers to the FOMU foyer. They dissect contemporary visual culture through their practice and offer insights into how they spark imagination within this complex landscape. These are not monologues, but visual presentations— questions are sparked, discussions catch fire. Thoughts will mutate. And perspectives will shift.

FOMUTATIONS is a collaboration between FOMU and creative agency Mutant™

Lois Cohen

Themes such as femininity, identity, and alienation frequently appear in Lois Cohen's work. Inspired by TikTok videos and reality TV, she blurs the line between women and dolls, like mannequins. With extravagant styling, diverse casting, and a playful wink, she critiques a world where the real and the fake are increasingly merging.

Cohen's work has been published in magazines such as Vogue Italia and Numéro Berlin, where she explores themes like social media and cultural identity. She has created campaigns for Adidas and Playboy and has received international recognition for her work.
