In 2012, Gilbert d'Haen (Deurne, °1932) donated his life's work to FOMU. The archive contains no less than 280,000 negatives, a number of cameras, darkroom equipment, a series of analogue prints and personal belongings. His photo archive shows a picture of a changing world. The arrival of television, the car and the Americanisation of society led to the decline of fixed values such as community life and religion. Out of a certain nostalgia, Gilbert d'Haen wanted to preserve what was disappearing. In addition, his professional assignments, studio work and publications explain the way a photographer from that time worked.
Gilbert d'Haen took his first steps as a professional photographer in the early sixties and remained active until 1992. d'Haen is primarily a professional photographer who emphasises his craftsmanship with his technical knowledge of analogue photography and expertise in the darkroom. His artistry is visible in his sense of composition, eye for detail and play of light and dark.
The exhibition and accompanying publication are the result of aa first collaboration between the Fotomuseum Antwerp and KADOC-KU Leuven.
