Workshop: Group picture – schools

Strike a pose before an old camera for a unique class picture! Can you sit still for a whole minute for the photo, just like in the old days? The guide will lead you through the whole process from development to printing in the darkroom of the FOMU. Discover the magic of photography during this workshop.

What to expect? 
 
  • A guided tour of the FOMU (approx. 45 mins.), focussing on photographic techniques and comparing photography from the past and present. A few photos will be discussed in detail during the workshop.
  • Introduction to a group portrait: what is important when taking a group picture? Are there different ways to take a group picture? How do you make sure everyone is clearly visible on the picture?
  • Introduction to an old camera: how does an analogue camera work? Why do you see everyone upside down? Why doesn’t this camera have a button?
  • Shooting and developing the picture in the FOMU darkroom: this is where you will learn the basics of analogue photography. You will learn what a negative and positive image is and what the aperture does. The guide will explain the role of the different chemical products (developer and fixer), and what the enlarger and dryer are for.In this way you will discover the different steps you need to take to produce a photo.
  • We will take a second picture with some room for experimenting, e.g. a ghost photo where everyone posing is doing their best to notsit still …
  • A positive and a negative print is made of each group photo. The group will be able to take home four pictures.

  • This workshop is suitable for school groups from the 3rd grade of primary school up until the 6th grade of secondary school
  • Maximum 15 students per group
  • Duration: 120 minutes
  • Museum admission: free for visitors under 18 years old
