On April 18th, Barbara Debeuckelaere will present her book 'OM at FOMU. 'OM is a collective, visual work of and from the women and girls of eight Palestinian families in the Tel Rumeida quarter in Hebron. Hebron is a complex city situated in the West Bank.

Two of the Palestinian women who co-created ‘OM will be present at the book launch. ‘OM means ‘mother’ and shows the point of view of Palestinian women and their daily life, their raising a family in a place, under constant threat and fear. Warmth and strength become visible in the images that show the intimate family life in Tel Rumeida.

The women and Debeuckelaere decided to use analogue cameras instead of digital ones. For them digital images are connected to news items, social media, photojournalism, men and violence. Analogue photography allows for something more sensitive, more intuitive and less predictable. It shows the messy chaos of life, including all its flaws tenderly. The unpredictable character of the analogue, the light leaks, deep colours, the mistakes, embody the warm atmosphere of their homes but also the fact that these women have very little control over politics.  Adam Broomberg calls it ‘a benevolent whisper’ in his text for the book. 'OM is a work of love and joy and resistance.
